The Handyman's Pocket Book: Tool Strop Dressing.

A coarser dressing suitable for finishing tools is made from fine emery powder and oil or vaseline.  An alternative is to use one of the fine-grade pastes used for grinding in the valves of motor-car engines.  Wood carvers use a strop dressing made of crocus powder mixed with oil or vaseline.
